Emergent transformations at the intersection of ecology and wellbeing
Programme leadership for purpose-driven organisations
Welcome
I’m Sam Williams and this is Reflexive Ecology
This is a portfolio of projects where ecological restoration and experiential wellbeing meet. They are collaborations designed to catalyse healing, resilience and regeneration.
From environmental conservation to mental health, this is place-based, nature-embedded work focused on meaningful personal, collective and systemic transformation.
“Action on behalf of life transforms. As we work to heal the earth, the earth heals us” Robin Wall Kimmerer

A selection of current and recent work rooted in place-based practical action within natural systems, these are embodied, storied, emergent collaborations towards recovery.

Celebrating stories of meaningful exploration, Wildside Journeys is a global community of storytellers aiming to shift dominant narratives in adventure travel and outdoor lifestyles. Hosting writers and creatives from around the world, this is where people, landscapes and the more-than-human meet.
Co-founder and associate editor, I contribute articles and photo essays mostly exploring human relationships with mountains and the wilderness, as well as philosophical musings on what I call "emergent adventure": the space where experiential movement meets nature connection in a living world.

Many of us yearn to re-entangle ourselves with the more-than-human world, to re-align our bodies to the rhythms of nature, and to rekindle the fires of our indigenous souls. The Land-Based Living Collective is a response to this call, and is a growing movement nurturing low-impact land-based lifestyles.
Building beautiful straw bale, timber and earthen buildings, I supported the organisation with management consultancy, programme development and coaching. I was also lucky enough to roll up my sleeves and help with construction projects in Devon, Cornwall and the Cotswolds.

My dad and I found an old horse box in a field, and set about rebuilding it as a mobile sauna. Doing things the old way, we sourced local materials, milling and processing Dartmoor timber before combining with a top-of-the-range Scandinavian woodburner.
Sharing the sauna, together with a farm-made shower and plunge pool, for weddings, parties and retreats, this has become a small local business encouraging healthy lifestyles, embodied connection and social get-togethers.

The world over, local communities work tirelessly to protect and restore the places they love from the devastating impacts of the climate and nature crises. The Conservation Collective is a global network of local foundations funding these effective grass-roots conservation initiatives.
Providing programme management for a large-scale biodiversity mapping and ecosystem restoration project in Formentera, I coordinated partners in the UK and Spain, including experts in ecology and nature finance, community groups, private sector sponsors, and the University of Seville.

Beginning life as pandemic-era walks in the woods of Dartmoor, Mindfully Wild is a small collaboration that aims to share the therapeutic benefits of being in nature. Coming together for reflection, connection and peace, we support relaxed and unpretentious experiences in the wild.
Non-profit and no logo, we run two or three immersions each year. We do this to receive and share the incomparable gifts of sleeping under the stars, bathing in the rivers, and reconnecting with the ecology of which we’re part. Each experience has proven uniquely beautiful.

A community interest company at the intersection of art, academia, activism and policy, Radical Ecology explores imaginative transformations in response to our planetary crises. Their purpose is to decolonise the environmental justice movement through research, events and campaigns.
I supported Radical Ecology’s core team with growth and communications consultancy and programme management. As well as building their fundraising pipeline, and making a number of cases for support, I also helped embed the cultures and systems required for more resilient, sustainable growth.

Practice
Nature connection as participatory delivery
Managing projects across a range of contexts - from local place-based initiatives to complex, global partnership - I provide multidisciplinary production and delivery.
Working with a variety of organisations, programmes and campaigns, this brings together robust project management, action-orientated consultancy, coaching, and hands-on doing.

Approach:
Reflexive Ecology names a way of thinking and acting within a dynamic, entangled world. Reflexivity asks us to recognise our participation in the systems we seek to influence. Ecology reminds us that those systems are relational, adaptive and alive.
Because "the major problems in the world are the result of the difference between how nature works and the way people think" (Gregory Bateson), my approach embeds ecological thinking into strategic organisational resilience, innovation and growth.
Drawing on a multidisciplinary background, this nature-based practice unlocks regeneration through purposeful engagement, embodied practical action, collective meaning-making and collaboration, and emergent movement towards key positive tipping points.

An experienced project, programme and team leader, I design, deliver, support and enable collaborative efforts towards impactful outcomes. While strategy and operational delivery are contextual, they are also agile, iterative and adaptive.
Whether local or global, I work collaboratively to provide human-centred strategic communications, storytelling and digital transformation, as well as the production of products and services, brands, campaigns, events and other community unifiers.
Drawing from international experience of B2C, B2B and B2G fundraising, sales and partnerships, I also provide sustainable growth services including commercial and philanthropic strategies, proposition and pipeline development, and bid writing.
-
Designing and delivering impactful projects and programmes, I support and enable those working towards complex, multilayered outcomes in environmental conversation, health and wellbeing, research and education, and the experience economy.
Bridging purposeful change-making with entrepreneurial experience and commercial acumen, I support and enable organisations and their leaders to balance stability and growth, to drive value through impact, to manage risk, and to turn ambition into action.
“Education is the point at which we decide whether we love the world enough to assume responsibility for it” (Hannah Arendt). It is in this spirit that I work towards both ecological renewal and human wellbeing, with participatory experience, education and learning connecting the two.
“When we reconnect with the larger web of life, we remember who we are” Joanna Macy

Over nearly 20 years in health, education and technology, I have worked with leading universities, NGOs and businesses in the UK, Europe, Africa, and the Americas. I feel lucky to have collaborated with brilliant, diverse people from Nobel-prize winners to indigenous communities.
Starting at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, I spent many years in research, development and communications at Goldsmiths University of London, the Institute of Development Studies, UCL’s Institute of Education and the London Business School.
For over a decade, I provided fundraising, communications and programme management consultancy for NGOs and charities working in health, education and global development. These included Rethink Metal Illness, Variety Children’s Charity and Street Child.
After founding Project Cordillera - an award-winning adventure travel social enterprise - which after ten years evolved into Wildside Journeys, I held senior roles in health, fitness and wellbeing technology in the US and public health policy and local government in the UK.
Achievements include founding successful startups, leading scale-ups to multimillion dollar revenues, personally negotiating seven-figure partnerships, building flourishing multicultural collaborations, and consistently pairing meaningful impact and sustainable growth.

Further training: Theory of Change (Acumen), Systems Practice (Omidyar), Storytelling for Change (Ariel), Sustainable Woodland Management (Centre for Alternative Technology), and Nature-Based Leadership (Green Minds).
In 2024 I received the Radical Seeds Fellowship awarded by Emergence Magazine (Kalliopeia Foundation), and in 2026 I studied Gandhian Ethics and Leadership with Vandana Shiva at Navdanya Earth University.
A committed autodidact, I maintain an experiential education through care, voluntary and expeditionary experiences, physical training, and the study of deep and social ecology, ecological anthropology, and more.
